Does anyone have a Lollipop based Android on MTS that has MMS working? Apparently I can't make it work on this nexus 5 and dealing with MTS is aggravating. I want to rule out a bad sim or something but would like to see the config on a phone that actually works first. :) Please contact me directly off lists/thread if you can help. :) -- Sean

stderr/stdout in Linux cronjobs?

Hi All, I have a weird (or stupid idk) problem. A script of mine produces different results when ran interactively as root, from when ran as a cron job. used=`report -i --csv 2>/dev/null | awk '/Total/ {print $4}'` echo $used is Total The command executed says "Using config file XXX" to stderr and something useful to stdout of which I extract the value of Total. Redirecting the barf to /dev/null. Now as a cron job the $used is empty. I believe that cronjob would redirect stderr to stodut? But here it happens also for the subprocesses ? Is Notepad++ too low-brow for what you want? If I want WYSIWYG-style, I just load the page in a web browser. I love that program to pieces. I'm working on custom markup for our Meru logs. X11 forwarding through SSH after su/sudo

Turns out, at least on RHEL/Centos-style systems, if you run su(1) or sudo(8) after ssh'ing into a system, you can't run X11 apps from the su{do}'d user because of the way SSH handles X authentication there - it puts the Xauth cookie into the .Xauthority file instead of an environment variable. I'm seeing references that Ubuntu & Debian don't behave like this, but don't have a live system to confirm. I vaguely recall HPUX not behaving like this, and I don't care enough to test on *BSD right now. Since I regularly need to su/sudo to another identity on a remote CentOS system, and it's a shared system, I don't want to gratuitously grant wide-open connection to my local X display; I at least want to limit the window of vulnerability... it doesn't look like I can eliminate it entirely. Here's the best work-around I could come up with. I think it manages to avoid exposing the Xauth data or anything else, but potentially requires you to enter your password more than once if sudo(8)'s cache has expired. It also allows someone else su'd into that userid *at the same time as me* to access my Xauth cookies, but that's an acceptable window of risk for me since the cookie becomes invalid after I disconnect the SSH session. I think this chunk of code is safe from obvious exploits (or errors), but dissenting opinions are welcome. N.B. long-time shell users will cringe at seeing $* instead of $@, but it turns out to be correct in this case: $@ *doesn't work* there. Can anyone recommend web design / editing software that is free (beer) that runs on (gasp) Windows (and Linux too would be nice, but Windows is a must). I'm talking about something for non-programmer-type semi-"power user" people. Doesn't need fancy AJAX / HTML5 / CSS3 stuff, just a basic editor to let non-technical people edit existing static HTML. Basically FrontPage, but free. And preferably not something that is more mal/ad/spy than ware. (No, it's not for me...)

parallel port

Having some parallel port issues (ok, stop laughing!). Can some people with parallel ports on their mobos (real ones, not usb-based ones) send me the output of: tail -c+1 /proc/sys/dev/parport/parport0/{autoprobe,base-addr,dma,irq,modes} I'm especially interested to see what you get if you have ECP mode set in the BIOS. Also: dmesg |grep parport or grep parport /var/log/messages My 2008 motherboard refuses to let linux use ECP, even though the BIOS says ECP. EPP seems to work, but doesn't give me a DMA. Other boards I've checked use EPP and DMA. Without DMA, cups printing uses I/O polling and is ***SLOW*** and uses 100% cpu for 30s per page. Ouch. weird a.out in /var/log/httpd

Uh oh. Finding an a.out in your /var/log/httpd doesn't instill a warm fuzzy feeling. I have ~ 4k a.out there dated Oct 12, which unfortunately is just past my logrotate cutoff now, so I can't check access.log (drat) without hitting the (hard to hit) backups. file a.out a.out: ELF 32-bit LSB executable, Intel 80386, version 1 (SYSV), dynamically linked (uses shared libs), not stripped I fired up a live-cd linux with no disks or net attached to try to run it (I put it on a usb stick). But when I do *the shell* returns ENOENT and won't run. I tried ./a.out. I tried moving it to a fs that shouldn't be mounted noexec. I tried strace a.out and strace ./a.out and strace shows only the exec attempt and the error print and quit. Huh? How can I get this thing to run? Anyway to see what it is doing? Disassemble? It is not stripped, so gdb? How can I step-run it from the start (ie nothing executes until I step)? What else to do with this file? I'll see if I can dig up the access.log from that date and get more details.

creating wifi-capable speakers

There are a few things I want to set up for audio / media in my house. The house isn't very large, but it has two levels, plus the basement (which is living space, and where my linux box is). My linux box is my media server (well, it usually is, but my partition table has disappeared on one drive and... that's a whole other story.) I am thinking about speakers at least in the kitchen and the bedroom. Converting the sound system hooked up to my TV would be nice, too. I don't like the range on bluetooth for this application. The $25 1x2" bluetooth gadget I have plugged into my living room sound system is ok, but doesn't seem to have the range or behaviour I'd like, in actuality. So I was thinking about wifi. However wifi speakers are quite expensive, and seem very overpriced to me ($250-$800? Seriously?) Like my little $25 bluetooth->3.5mm gadget, I was hoping to find something simple like that in wifi flavour, but I haven't come across anything. Do these even exist? The other option is getting a Raspberry Pi (which has wifi or ethernet and a 3.5mm audio jack) and setting up as a DLNA client for speakers / speakers systems that have a 3.5 input. When researching this they often talk about setting up the Pi and also setting up a phone to be the client that selects the music or playlist, but it occoured to me that my old HTC phone has both wifi and a 3.5 input.... so I can probably just use the phone to perform the function "as the Pi" in one of my three areas. I can use my current phone or tablet as the control devices. Has anyone here mucked around with this stuff already? Any warnings for this setup, or alternate recommendations? My HTC phone is currently unrooted and running Gingerbread, I think. I will know when I can find the proprietary charger. No objections to rooting it and trying to install whatever I please on there. My current phone is a Blackberry, but I'm running Snap.
