The Manitoba UNIX User Group (MUUG) will be holding its next monthly meeting on Tuesday, September 9. The meeting topic for this month is as follows: Advanced Usage of OpenSSH In many ways, SSH has become the ubiquitous tool for using remote shells. It is that, and a lot more. Over the years, SSH (and specifically OpenSSH) has blossomed into a networking and security Swiss-army knife. When used properly, SSH is a powerful tool which can solve some surprisingly difficult problems in very simple and elegant ways. It can also be used as a tool to give you some peace of mind when working in hostile, administratively constrained or seemingly closed networks. In this presentation by Sean Cody, the goal will be to show you a few tips, tricks and secure practices using some lesser known OpenSSH features, as well as some defences against (or at least some awareness of) some of the more clever uses of OpenSSH. The group holds its general meetings at 7:30pm on the second Tuesday of every month from September to June. (There are no meetings in July and August.) Meetings are open to the general public; you don't have to be a MUUG member to attend. ********************************************************************** Please note our meeting location: The IBM offices, at 400 Ellice Ave. (between Edmonton and Kennedy). When you arrive, you will have to sign in at the reception desk, and then wait for someone to take you (in groups) to the meeting room. Please try to arrive by about 7:15pm, so the meeting can start promptly at 7:30pm. Don't be late, or you may not get in. (But don't come too early either, since security may not be there to let you in before 7:15 or so.) Non-members may be required to show photo ID at the security desk. Limited parking is available for free on the street, either on Ellice Ave. or on some of the intersecting streets. Indoor parking is also available nearby, at Portage Place, for $3.00 for the evening. I've found that the ticket system built into trac (http://trac.edgewall.org I think) is quite nice as well, and doesn't require a double phd in theoretical physics and neurobiology to setup. MUUG Board Elections - Call for Nominations

Hear ye, hear ye! This is a preliminary call for nominees to participate in the election for the MUUG board. Those elected will serve from October 2008 until October 2009. The deadline to nominate yourself, or someone else, is September 30, 2007. Instructions follow. The MUUG board is charged with coordinating the meetings and other events by the group. It's fun, and you get a role in guiding the group. All are encouraged to apply. ------------------------ MUUG Board Elections - Call for Nominations Every October the Manitoba Unix User Group holds its Annual Meeting, the main goals of which are to elect a new Board of Directors and to pass any special resolutions. (Aside from that, it is a regular meeting) Any MUUG member in good standing can be nomi-nated to run for a position on the Board. As of this writing, the following members of the cur-rent Board have let their names stand for re-election: Gilbert Detillieux Systems Analyst University of Manitoba Michael Doob Professor University of Manitoba Kevin McGregor Network Analyst City of Winnipeg Montana Quiring Systems Administrator University of Manitoba Doug Shewfelt Systems Specialist City of Winnipeg Adam Thompson Consultant athompso.net Of course, this list is just a starting point. Any member in good standing of the group can be nominated simply by getting the support of one other member. If you feel you would like to contribute to the group by running for a board position, please don't hesitate to do so. (In fact, we'd like to see the number of board members increase.) If you want to be nominated, or to nominate someone else, send a letter to the group's postal box or deliver it in person to a current board member. The letter must contain the name, title, and employer of the nominee, along with a short (100 word or so) biography, and must contain the signatures of the nominee and one other member. The letter must be received no later than September 30, 2008, which is 14 days prior to the October 14 meeting. Although the by-laws require that the nominations be done in writing, with signatures, you can speed up the process by sending e-mail to <election(a)muug.mb.ca>, with the above information, and sending the signed paper copy later. In this case, please include the e-mail address of both the nominee and the supporter on the CC: list of the message, so that all parties concerned have a record of the communication. WRT54G V5 "fun-ness"

While there doesn't appear to be alot of local activity on these items, I thought I'd pass along my latest notes on this ... I have quite a few of these routers (for play mostly, some ran asterisk) and at one point early this year (late last year?) I had thrown on a whack-job of a firmware image that made the device inoperable -- not that this was an expensive router (v5 with only limited ram) it did have some usefulness ... so, since I had a little bit of time and this baby was sitting in the closer for quite a while, I went back to it ... wouldn't accept any firmware's thrown at it at all for some reason -- since I didn't have a jtag hanging around, (not that I could find it even if I tried) I tried the ol' "fry-the-flash" trick (shorting pins 15 and 16 together on the flash chip) ... (You *really* have to have a magnifying glass to see each of those pins!) ... so, fry they go and reboot and voila -- and re-send the fresh new better improved firmware for dd-wrt (micro) onto it and it takes it .. wait a few minutes and it's back in normal operation again :-) happy days. While this is still quite a useful gadget -- I can turn off the router functionality and merge it's port with the other 4 ports of the switch to get an extra port! (That I like -- I really need a bigger switch) The usual cautions -- opening and every shorting your circuits will void anything you have for a warranty if you really care ... and you really can do this with a jtag ... probably safer too. ;-) I still have one netgear router to fix up from a bad openwrt firmware image ... will see how long this one takes ... Dan.

Free Computers*

As some of you may know, I am moving to Los Angeles for work. As some of you also know, I have a rather large collection of computers. Since I will not be able to bring most of them to Los Angeles with me, I am looking for good homes for some of them. A lot of them I would gladly give away, some I will want money for, but if you are interested in nice unix workstations and servers (Sun primarily, but lots of SGI's, a couple IBM's and Alpha's and even some PC stuff), let me know. ext3 fs corrupted

I installed FC9 a few weeks ago but I have ended up with the root fs corrupted. I did see a reference to coming out of hibernation with a different kernel can corrupt the file system. I suspect that was my problem since I believe the auto update did apply a new kernel and I did hibernate last night. But of course it could have been some other cause. fsck suggests trying fsck -b 8193 ... When I tried fsck with -b I get a message about the Device is busy. Any suggestions? Since most of the work on the system that I have done is installing and configuring software I am inclined to just start over. -- Bill

Request for articles

Since it's a little quite today I figure it would be a good time to post the request. Call-A.P.P.L.E. is a free magazine with articles on the Apple//, Mac, and *NIX platforms. At this point it is produced completely on a volunteer basis (I don't have access to the graphics or ads which normally appear in the magazine.). Currently I'm the guy in charge of producing the magazine. It will be put together during the first weekend of August. It will then be posted to http://members.shaw.ca/digitalcivilization/ within the following week or so. Our regular site (http://callapple.org) is having troubles at the moment.
