using hub to connect to shaw

This should be simple, but for some reason I can't get it working. My present setup: shaw cable modem ----> linux box / iptables ----> airport extreme ----> a happy group of Mac & PCs, some wired, some wireless Problem: My broker supplies me with software for streaming quotes that must run on XP and not be behind a firewall. Solution (I thought): Use my old Allied Telesyn CentreCOM MR815T hub/repeater, and take advantage of the fact that Shaw will issue 2 IPs. shaw cable modem ----> hub port 1 |---------> linux box / iptables ----> etc, as before port 2 |---------> promiscuous XP box If I connect either the network (my present system) or the XP box directly to the cable modem, each seems to work. If I connect either of these through the hub, it no longer works. A diode will light up showing the connection of a PC to a particular port, but will not light up when I plug in the ethernet cable from the cable modem. The hub will indicate activity when an attempt is made to access the internet, but no activity is registered on the cable modem. I have used different ports on the hub, 3 different ethernet cables to connect the modem to the hub, and at times I have rebooted the modem or the PC attached to the hub (various permutations of these actions). The hub has 8 ports - the first 7 are labelled with an "X" which I believe means MDI-X (crossover) configuration to plug a PC into. Port 8 has a switch to select MDI or MDI-X. Hello, I would like to find a Winnipeg hosting business that has a decent Internet pipe that would give me a public IP (or two) and a network connection and let me plop a server in their secure server room. Even if I didn't have a public IP, but had a couple hostnames that llinked to dynamic IP's that would be fine too (does that make sense?). Moving from CRT to a HD LCD

Hello, I've posted it here: http://knoppmyth.net/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?p=117916#117916 ...but thought I would send an email to the round table as well. I've been a (knopp)mythtv users for 3 years now. We are currently using: -27 inch Toshiba CRT TV -Houpauge PVR250 tuner -Canadian Shaw digital TV What we're planning on doing is upgrading to a large LCD TV. Probably this one: Sharp Aquos 1080p 42" Widescreen LCD HDTV** (LC42D65) http://tinyurl.com/sharpLC42D65 I'm looking for advice from Canadians or people knowledgeable about Canadian broadcasting regarding how to best use MythTV with Shaw digital (HD)TV and a HD LCD TV. If you could take the time to offer help I would really appreciate it. The Manitoba UNIX User Group (MUUG) will be holding its next monthly meeting on Tuesday, December 9. The meeting topic for this month is as follows: Round-table, Gadget Showcase and Mix & Mingle With the usually active holiday season approaching, we'll take things at a more relaxed pace. So, we'll give more time for the round-table discussion (rather than cutting it short as we had to last month), then instead of a very short coffee break, we'll have a more laid-back mingler with some holiday treats and more time for informal discussion. This will also be a geek gadget showcase! So, if you've got a cool (but portable) geek gadget to show off, bring it to the meeting. Want to show off that new Eee PC, or that iPhone, OpenMoko phone, or whatever new gadget? Bring it along! Does it run some flavour of UNIX or Linux? Even better. Is it open source? Better still! We'll have time to show some things during the round-table discussion, if you need the data projector, or you can just show your gadget to small groups in the later part of the evening. The group holds its general meetings at 7:30pm on the second Tuesday of every month from September to June. (There are no meetings in July and August.) Meetings are open to the general public; you don't have to be a MUUG member to attend. ********************************************************************** Please note our meeting location: The IBM offices, at 400 Ellice Ave. (between Edmonton and Kennedy). Paypal?

Unfortunately I don't make it out in person to many MUUG meetings anymore due to schedule conflicts but I'd still like to keep my membership active. This year, like past years, the membership form is sitting collecting dust on my desk because I'm simply horrible at cutting checks, finding envelops buying stamps etc. What a hassle! Is it possible that the group could setup online payments? This requires nothing special on the MUUG web site other than a link to a payment portal such as pay-pal. Implication of multiple interfaces on the same subnet?

I'm just wondering if anyone has an in depth understanding of the Linux networking stack and can tell me what the implications are for putting two interfaces on the same network in the same subnet. Specifically, if you have a laptop connected via both Wifi and ethernet and both are active and have received IP addresses via DHCP, what would the expected result of that be? Which interface would be used for traffic to our subnet? Here is the way the routing table looks: Destination Gateway Genmask Use Iface 192.168.5.0 0.0.0.0 255.255.255.0 eth0 192.168.5.0 0.0.0.0 255.255.255.0 wlan0 127.0.0.0 0.0.0.0 255.0.0.0 lo 0.0.0.0 192.168.5.254 0.0.0.0 eth0 The routing table indicates that eth0 is preferred for traffic outside my network but how was that determination made? If I unplug the ethernet cable it immediately changes the routing table so that the wlan0 interface is the default gateway. I'm wondering what controls that behaviour? -- John Lange www.johnlange.ca
