(Simple?) Perl question

I'm trying to decipher some Perl code which runs on a Windows server, and I ran into this: $cmd = "./psexec.exe \\\\\\\\" . $server_name I think the idea is to end up with ./psexec.exe \\server but WTF eight backslashes? Does that make any sense? If so, can someone ELI5? Kevin

WTB: notebook IDE cable (old style)

If anyone has an old cable for a notebook IDE hard drive sitting around, I'd like to buy it. I know most notebooks didn't use cables, but you could buy them separately for bench testing, etc. I need anything that has the dense/small notebook style 44-pin (22x2) ~45mm width *FEMALE* connector. The other side is irrelevant, whether it's dense F or M or normal IDE (desktop) size. But the important side has to be female, and it has to be a cable, NOT an adapter on that end (due to space constraints). If you find one, bring it to the muug meeting on Tue and/or notify me by email. I can also pick up if required. Thanks!

The Manitoba UNIX User Group (MUUG) will be holding its next monthly meeting on Tuesday, December 13. The meeting topic for this month is as follows: Designing Passwords - The Mnemonic Evolution of Password Generation 17-year MUUG member Ihor Jakowec will present some interesting techniques for remembering long passwords by taking advantage of visual memory hints and kinesthetic memory (or "dance moves" as he calls it). Round-table, Gadget Show and Tell, Mingling and Munchies As 2016 draws to a close, MUUG continues our recent tradition of turning the December meeting into more of a social event. Bring your favourite gadget! We will have the usual round-table session, followed by a gadget show & tell, a short presentation, and then some time for mingling, eating, and drinking. This will be a pot-luck snack event. Cookies and pop will be provided by MUUG, but members are encouraged to bring their own finger food to sample and share. Feel free to bring your own drink as well if you want something particular - just remember that we don't have a liquor license! Winnipeg Harvest Food Drive Also as in previous years, we will combine our pot luck with a food drive for Winnipeg Harvest. This month, any member who brings at least 1 item for Winnipeg Harvest to the December meeting will be given an entry into the door prize draw! RegEx help needed (sed?)

I'm using sed to massage some input. Specifically, I have input lines like aaaaaaaaaa/BBBBB_ccc@00000 or aaaaaaaaaa/BBBBB@00000 and I want the output to always be BBBBB I've got most of it, but I can't figure out how to get rid of anything at the end of the line after EITHER the underscore OR the '@' (including either of those two characters). Is this possible in one expression in sed? I can do it with piping the input through sed twice but I was wondering if one pass would do it. Currently I'm using sed "s/^.*\/$.*$[_(a)].*$/\1/" Which doesn't get rid of the "_ccc" when it appears, just the "@00000". Suggestions?

Linux Pro Mag has a neat DVD this month

The November Linux Pro Mag, which I think should still be on the newstands(??), has a neat DVD this month. Instead of the usual lame distro, they put on a digital searchable copy of every issue and article since they started publishing (191 issues). Not a bad deal for the price of 1 magazine. (As a subscriber I just got it last week, however they might be a month ahead on the newstands, so if you want it, go grab it now! Or order it on their website, though I'm sure shipping is prohibitive.)

procmail replacement?

I've read that procmail is somewhat deprecated. Is this true? Is anyone still using it regardless? What replacements are there that you recommend? Kevin
