Hey everyone, As it turns out I didn't have to go very far in terms of testing the network issue I described at the meeting last night. * Connect laptop to port in question. * No link light. * Grab new cable that is premade. Replace. * No link light. * Wiggle cable. Entire port on switch moves up and down with cable. * Link light. Rob

Howdy folks! A reminder that the MUUG meeting is tonight, December 10, with the following topic: Round-table, Mingling and Munchies As the year draws to a close, we've decided to continue our not-quite-yet-tradition of turning the December meeting into more of a social event. We'll have the usual round-table session, which can run longer than average since there's no pressure to fit the presentation in, followed by time for mingling and eating and drinking instead of the usual short coffee break. This will be a "pot-luck" event, like we've done in the past. Some food and drink will be provided by MUUG, but members are encouraged to bring food to sample. Feel free to bring your own drink, too, if you want something particular just remember, please, that we don't have a liquor license! Winnipeg Harvest Food Drive Also as in previous years, we're combining this with a food drive for Winnipeg Harvest. We'd like members to bring some non-perishable food item for donation to the food bank. They have information about what they're looking for on their website. Winnipeg Harvest has apparently been running a shortfall all year, and needs your donations! http://winnipegharvest.org/donate-food/ So, please come, one and all, with a snack item to share with the group, and a non-perishable food item for Winnipeg Harvest. Acclaim to the new board of directors! I didn't think it cost $500/yr of postage for the newsletter - seems high for a tech group. I don't know about others but I've been subscribed just to remind me how quaint it is to receive information on dead trees and will turn that off. Why does MUUG pay $350-$700/yr for a PO box? Does it receive anything? Actually, yes, we receive a fair bit of mail. Less now, of course. Also, not all of us are quite as eager to boldly plunge into the future as you as are. I prefer to think of it as supporting Canada Post ;-). And, IIRC, some of those numbers are for two years not one. As for postage, the numbers add up... #members * 10 * (paper + ink + envelopes + folding/stuffing + postage) equals a surprisingly large number. And we've only done electronic delivery this year, so we expect that cost to go down next year. Some of us - possibly many, considering how many people haven't already opted out of the paper newsletter - prefer quite strongly to read things on dead trees... And please remember how long we've been doing this. Like UNIX itself, we don't change the way we do things just for the sake of change. The Manitoba UNIX User Group (MUUG) will be holding its next monthly meeting on Tuesday, December 10. The meeting topic for this month is as follows: Round-table, Mingling and Munchies As the year draws to a close, we've decided to continue our not-quite-yet-tradition of turning the December meeting into more of a social event. Does anyone know a local, reasonably-priced source of a N Male to RP TNC Male cable? Or should I just order it online somewhere? I know of one online source where I can get one for $10-$15+shipping, but a local source would be preferable. Kevin

Find the CWD and environment variables for a running process...

Someone asked on #openbsd (freenode) how to get a running process' current working directory as well as it's environment variables... Interesting problem. Environment variables are easy but the current working directory of a running process requires a bit more thought. Solution (w's are for column width truncation) for PID's environment: ps -p `pgrep tmux` -wwwwwe eg: sean@_:~$sudo ps -p `pgrep irssi` -wwwwwe PID TT STAT TIME COMMAND 14485 p0 S+ 4:41.35 _=/usr/local/bin/irssi LOGNAME=sean HOME=/home/sean MAIL=/var/mail/sean TMUX=/tmp/tmux-1000/default,4913,0 PATH=/home/sean/bin:/bin:/sbin:/usr/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/local/sbin:/usr/games:. TMUX_PANE=%0 TERM=screen SHELL=/bin/ksh USER=sean (irssi) For the working directory of the process: sudo lsof -p `pgrep irssi` awk '/cwd/{print "find "$9" -inum "$8" | head -n 1"}' | sudo sh eg. sean@_:~$sudo lsof -p `pgrep irssi` | awk '/cwd/{print "find "$9" -inum "$8" | head -n 1"}' | sudo sh /home/sean Anyways it was an interesting problem so I figured worthy to share. Unfortunately I couldn't think of a way to doing it without lsof and sticking with base install and I didn't want to mount /proc... In Linux you can get a tool called 'pwdx' but that isn't portable, also linux's procfs also includes a cwd file in each process directory. -- Sean
